A short excerpt from the National Film Unit 1973 series, 'The years back,' shows the troops arriving in Alexandria and then training with their horses in the desert sands around the camp: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/video/34110/zeitoun-camp-egypt-1914-15
The Main Body arrived in Egypt on the 3rd of December after six weeks at sea. They were disappointed to find that they would be training in Egypt, as they had been expecting to train in England, “Home” in spirit if not fact (indeed, Commander Godley had brought his family with him in anticipation of their return home).
The New Zealand camp was in the desert at Zeitoun, on the edge of the suburb of Heliopolis, some six miles from Cairo. Trams ran every 20 minutes from Heliopolis to Cairo.
